The Volvo V70 is a mid-size five-door station wagon / estate manufactured by Volvo Cars since 1996 — and closely related to the S70, S60 and S80 saloons as well as the more stylized four-wheel drive Cross Country (XC) and XC70.

Since its inception, the V70 has evolved through three generations — notably, the second generation designed by Peter Horbury.

Over 80% of V70s are sold in Europe, one third in Sweden. The Volvo V70 has been the best selling car in Sweden for many years.

The original V70 was a development of the Volvo 850 station wagon and sedan series. The new name reflected Volvo's new strategy of naming vehicles depending on size and body style. Thus, the 850 was deemed to be a relative size 70. The name is then appended with the type of vehicle. So the station wagon adopted V (for Versatility), S (for Saloon) and C (for the new Coupé); these cars are respectively known as V70, S70 and C70. There were 1,800 improved and new parts in the design from the original 850, including upgraded passive and active safety, better handling and new engines. Gone were the 850's square edges and replaced by rounded corners to suit the late 90s style trend. Other changes included a new 'family face' for the V/S/C70 models, colour coded bumpers, clear indicator lenses, and a new dashboard fascia and materials. However on the whole, one could say the car was similar to its predecessor, but nevertheless, a successful facelift.

First generation variants

Volvo's variant badging of their cars in this period is complex due to the vast array of models and equipment packages on offer; this policy was adopted because Volvos were seen to be a car that would suit a wide spectrum of the public, thus a vast choice of models and packages was available to suit the most specific customer. In its most basic form, the model line up consisted of Torslanda — named after its assembly plant, Torslandaverken — SE and CD.

Option packages included:

  • Sports - with alloy wheels, rear spoiler, and fog lamps.
  • Comfort - child seat, air conditioning or electric sunroof, and trip computer.
  • Luxury - leather upholstery with electric driver's seat, climate control and cruise control, and wood fascia trim.
  • Estate - roof rails, self-levelling rear suspension, and luggage net.
  • Winter - headlamp wash/wipe, heated front seats and traction control.
  • Design - red wood/leather steering wheel, red wood-effect trim, and leather upholstery.

T5 and R models are high-performance models. The T5 was equipped with a sport-tuned high pressure turbocharged 2.3L engine with maximum boost pressure set at 10.5 PSI, and 'turbine' alloy wheels, whereas the Turbo models had a low pressure turbocharged 2.4L engine with maximum boost pressure at 7-8 PSI. The R was fitted with a full factory fitted body kit (chin spoiler and rear spoiler, anthracite alloy wheels) a range of unique colours.

In the end of 1999 (2001 for North America), Volvo released the all-new V70 based on the new P2 platform which itself was first used for the entirely Swedish-designed Volvo S80 sedan in 1997. This new car dispensed with the boxy shape of Volvos before it to take on a curvy profile much like the S40/S60 series, and added a new aggressive front end. Where the first generation V70 had a saloon variant (S70), the second generation lost the S70 as the new S80 was now seen to be the 'S70 for the new millennium'. The second generation of the V70 finished production for model year 2007.

The V70 shares the same sheet metal ahead of the B-pillar with the Volvo S60, although the grilles are different and the front bumpers are mildly different. The dashboard and the majority of the interior of both cars are the same.

The V70 XC received a major upgrade on its suspension and equipped with a soaring 8.2" min. ground clearance. This sets its versatility to a whole new level. For this reason, this year model of V70 XC even attracts buyers from SUV buyers of various manufacturers.

As was the case with all P2 platform Volvos, a minor refresh of the V70 occurred across all markets for the 2005 model year, which brought minor styling changes to the front fascia, tail lamps, along with several improvements and changes to the interior fittings.

Volvo continues to market the V70 second generation in Europe and Scandinavia, under the name V70 Classic.


The S60 (sedan version) scored four stars out of five in the EuroNCAP safety testing for adult occupent protection. 10/16 points were granted in the front test. Full marks, 16 of 16 were granted in the side test. Curtain airbags (Volvo:Inflatable Curtain) was standard equipment on the S60/V70 and so the car was awarded a further two points in the pole test.

The S60 (sedan version) scored four of five stars for front impact protection protection for driver and front passenger in the NHTSA safety testing and five out of stars for driver and rear passenger side impact protection.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety granted the S60 (sedan version) their highest rating of "good" for front crash protection. Rear crash protection was rated as "good". Volvo's WHIPS whiplash preventing seatback hinge mechanism is standard equipment and so evaluated by IIHS in the rear crash simulation. Side impact protection was rated as "acceptable". An increase in the rating of the driver dummy's pelvis/leg body region from "marginal" to "acceptable" would constitute an overall rating of "good" in this test. This in turn would award the sedan variant of the V70 a Top Safety Pick designation for receiving "good" ratings for front, side and rear tests in addition to Electronic Stability Control (Volvo:DTSC) being standard equipment.



The V70 is available as front or all-wheel drive (AWD) with manual, automatic or Geartronic, semi-automatic gearboxes. As before, there is an AWD only variant with raised suspension, plastic body cladding and an interior grab handle. This version was known as V70 XC (Cross Country) for the older cars, but was renamed XC70 for the new models.

Also following on from the previous generation was the use of five-cylinder, 20 valve inline transverse-mounted engines. All but the bottom range 2.4 employ turbochargers with either low or high pressure depending on the model. The most powerful vehicle in the regular range is the T5 (popular with UK police forces). This same engine is used in a variety of Volvo and other vehicles, and the level of power and performance produced is limited strongly by the computer systems. The V70 T5 can be chipped to deliver easily around 280 bhp (209 kW; 284 PS) and up to 315 bhp (235 kW; 319 PS) with custom fine tune. That is one reason why the vehicle is popular as a high speed vehicle with the police forces. The V70R, using the same engine, offers 300 bhp (224 kW; 304 PS) and 400 N·m (300 ft·lbf) as standard for the demanding driver. The V70R also comes with Volvo's 4C multi-mode suspension, developed in conjunction with Öhlins, to allow the driver to vary the cars handling depending on driving style and conditions. Furthermore the V70R has AWD and larger Brembo brakes, in order to compete with the (possible) higher demands.

The third V70 was officially unveiled by Volvo on 2 February 2007. The car was developed to be a slightly more up-market car than the previous model, but remains the same size. Despite this, rear-seat legroom is increased two centimeters and a revised tailgate design increases the load area volume by 55 L. The tailgate now has motorized lift and closing action. The interior is one of the most luxurious in its class.

As with the second-generation V70, the new car is a unique design sharing little externally with other Volvo models. The Ford EUCD platform is used and much of the interior (other than the rear seats and loadbay) are shared with the second generation S80. The new V70 will have a 3.2 L I6, a 3.0 L turbo straight-six, a light-pressure turbo 2.5 L I5, and two 2.4 L I5 diesel engines. Only the last two are offered with manual gearboxes. In Europe, all models except for the 3.2 L and 3.0 L version are available with manual gearboxes.

Comfort and luxury

The front seats and the rear bench are of orthopedic design to provide maximum comfort and support for all occupants. The V70 also features a high-end audio system. Dolby Pro Logic systems and sub-woofers are also available as upgrades to the standard audio system.

Options include DVD navigation with map data and remote control, a rear seat DVD entertainment system with two headrest monitors, headlamp washers, integrated child booster seats, an integrated home link remote control garage door opener, rear-door child-safety locks, rear park assist, power-adjustable passenger seats with 3-position memory and lumbar support, heated front seats, an integrated grocery bag holder, a rear view mirror compass, an integrated sunglass holder, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power glass moonroof, 12 volt power outlets, leather seats, rear tinted windows, and a rain sensor.

Anti-submarining seats and overhead-mounted seat belt reminder lights come standard. Other standard features for 2007 include Volvo on call roadside assistance for four years, rear window deactivation, safe approach and home safe lighting, a security system, engine immobilizer with encrypted ignition key, key integrated remote control with central power door locks, an outside temperature gauge, a tire pressure monitoring system, cruise control, a trip computer, driver information display, a power-adjustable driver seat with 3-position memory and lumbar support, ergonomically designed seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, flat-folding front passenger seats, aluminum integrated handle bar for front passenger, illuminated vanity mirrors in driver/front passenger sun visors, four reading lamps, cargo security cover, front center armrest, rear seat ventilation outlets on B-pillar, dual-zone electronic climate control, power windows with driver and passenger auto up/down with anti-trap feature, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with illuminated controls, remote audio controls in steering wheel, and much more.


As standard, the vehicle is equipped with driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags. Also featured is the WHIPS whiplash prevention system on the front seats.

An available option is third row seating; these seats are located in the crumple zone.

Later cars have the option of the BLIS blind-spot sensor system, that can detect vehicles otherwise hidden from view of the driver due to being just off to one side of the car.

As is typical for Volvos, all models feature daytime running lights to improve driver visibility and safety throughout the day. If an XC70 owner desires to have their daytime running lights turned off, they may do so at any authorized Volvo dealership.

The latest revision of the XC70 includes DSTC (standard on all models) - Dynamic Stability and Traction control, that combines the functions otherwise known as Electronic Stability Program and traction control.

EuroNCAP evaluated the V70 in 2007 awarding it 5 of 5 stars for adult occupant protection. The V70 scored 15 of 16 points in the front test and 16 of 16 in the side test. The car was penalized 1 point in the pole test for improper deployment of the curtain airbag in both the original test and the re-test. The car received one of two points available in the pole test. The V70 was granted an additional two points for seat belt reminders of three available in this category. The V70 received a total of 34 of 37 points and therefore five stars (33-37) in EuroNCAP's evaluation.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Volvo S80 (sedan varriant) their Top Safety Pick award. The S80 was granted the IIHS's highest rating of "good" in front,side and rear tests and has Electronic Stability Control as standard equipment to receive the award.

The Volvo 850 is a compact executive car produced by Volvo Cars from 1992 to 1997 (sold as 1993–1997 in the U.S. market) and designed by Jan Wilsgaard. Available in sedan/saloon and station wagon/estate body styles, the Volvo 850 was notable as the first front-wheel drive vehicle from this Swedish manufacturer to be exported to North America. It is often considered the vehicle that gave Volvo its reputation as a high-end auto maker in North America due to the level of features available in this model that were not offered in previous models. At the time of its development, the 850 was regarded as one of the largest engineering endeavors in Sweden.

The Volvo C30 is a small coupe produced by Volvo (part of the Ford Motor Company Group). The C30 is a three-door, four-seat hatchback powered by straight-4 and straight-5 engines. The car is a hatchback version of the S40/V50/C70 range, and uses the same Ford C1 (or Volvo P1) platform.

The production car was officially unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. In mid-2006, the C30 was approved for production launch in late 2006 in Europe. The C30 went on sale in Canada in March 2007 as a 2007 model, and in October 2007 in the United States as a 2008 model, with the T5 as the single version. It is being marketed as a premium hatchback or "sports coupe" specially designed for first-time Volvo buyers and the youth market. Production is expected to be 65,000 units a year, 75% for sale in the European market.

Notably, the design of the C30 recalls another important Volvo, the 1800ES, the estate adaptation of the P1800 Coupe. According to Simon Lamarre, chief studio designer, "the 1800ES has become one of the icons for Volvo," inspiring the design of the Volvo C30. However, not everyone is pleased with the C30s "sawed-off rear" and calling it "Volvo's AMC Gremlin."


The C30 is offered with a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines. Petrol enginess include a 99 hp (74 kW; 100 PS) 1.6 litre straight-4, a 123 hp (92 kW; 125 PS) 1.8 litre straight-4, a 143 hp (107 kW; 145 PS) 2.0 litre straight-4, a 168 hp (125 kW; 170 PS) 2.4 liter straight-5, and a 227 hp (169 kW; 230 PS) turbocharged 2.5 litre inline-5. Diesel engines will be a 108 hp (81 kW; 109 PS) 1.6 litre inline-4, a 134 hp (100 kW; 136 PS) 2.0 litre inline-4, and a 178 hp (133 kW; 180 PS) 2.4 litre inline-5. All models will be fitted with a manual gearbox, and the inline-5 petrol versions will have automatic transmissions as an option. Speculation suggesting that a 1.4 litre inline-4 petrol engine would be offered proved false and the smallest engine in the range is the 1.6 litre engines. The 2.0 liter diesel engine is available with a 6-speed dual clutch transmission (Powershift).

An upgraded sound system includes a digital 5×130 watt ICE Power amplifier from Alpine featuring Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, and 10 loudspeakers from Danish Dynaudio, appealing to the youth market.

Three modified C30s were shown at the 2006 SEMA event: Evolve's C30, IPD's C30 and a Heico Sportiv/Burton Snowboard C30.

The 2008 model year brings some minor changes, mostly adapting the interior to the facelifted S40/V50 and including as standard an Aux audio socket. Only the T5 2.5 litre turbocharged gasoline engine is available in the United States, for both manual and automatic transmissions.


Volvo is developing a plug-in hybrid electric version of the C30 at their California development centre. A concept of the C30 hybrid called the ReCharge was shown in September 2007 at the Frankfurt auto show. The hybrid C30 will be a flex-fuel or diesel-electric hybrid with a power train design similar to General Motors' E-Flex platform and its Chevrolet Volt concept vehicle


The C30 continues Volvo's marketing strategy to put safety as a primary concern. This is demonstrated through some recently developed safety features, including a method of overcoming the "blind spots" or "dead areas" in the driver's view to the rear through a system solely introduced by Volvo, known as BLIS (Blind Spot Information System).

The C30 also features a four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability program (ESP), traction control system and airbags all around for side impact and rollover protection, front and rear crumple zones, and a stiff occupant cell.

The Volvo C30 has a patented front and rear structure using four different grades of steel to absorb and redistribute impact energy around the body of the coupe. Volvo's Whiplash Protection System and Side Impact Protection System with side airbags and Inflatable Curtain are also standard. The seat belts have pretensioners to protect the occupants against unexpected accidents.

The car also uses Volvo's Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) which continuously monitors the car's preemptive systems such as steering wheel angle, pedal depressions, and overall factors that help the vehicle's computer to decide if the driver is busy or distracted merging or turning, and will then accordingly delay certain data or alerts that are unimportant.

The C30 has been criticized because in an effort to make it more responsive in curves it has become unreliable on ice or snow where the rear end can easily lose its grip.
